A Spring man is accused of striking and killing a 14-year-old girl and hitting a cyclist while on a drug used for bodybuilding, court records show.
Alexander Scott Wray, 26, an aspiring bodybuilder, has been charged with manslaughter for the fatal collision on May 28 at the 5000 block of Louetta, according to court documents from Harris County District Court.
Wray, driving his black Dodge Charger, told deputies that he had been driving to a 24 Hour Fitness when he struck Ana Sanchez, 14, and a cyclist after veering out of his lane.
The cyclist had been riding near the roadway and Sanchez was standing in a grassy area near the street. Witnesses told police that Wray struck the two when he veered onto the shoulder of the south side of the roadway, pushing the cyclist toward the center of the street and causing the teen to ride on the hood of the vehicle.
Sanchez rolled off the hood of the car and onto the ground and was left lying in a nearby business’s driveway, the document states. The teen later died from her injuries.
Wray told police at the scene that he was looking at his cell phone before the crash. A witness had called 911 to alert the police after seeing Wray sitting idle at a green light and driving erratically just before the collision. He said after honking his horn, the driver took no notice, but eventually took off at a quick speed, the witness told investigators.
The witness continued to follow the vehicle and saw the car shift into several lanes and almost strike another vehicle. While on the phone with 911, he witnessed the black Charger hit the two people on the side of the roadway.
A deputy at the scene said that Wray’s eyes appeared droopy, he was profusely sweating and appeared confused with his head dropping, eyes wide open and mouth slightly open. However, the officer said he did not believe the driver was intoxicated. Wray later tested positive for gamma-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB), a drug commonly ingested by bodybuilders, court records show. The “designer” drug is used by bodybuilders to stimulate muscle growth and also became popular for raves, with an effect of inducing relaxation. The Food and Drug Administration banned the drug, which also gained notoriety as a “date-rape” drug, in 1990, unless given under the supervision of a physician.
Wray was released on a $10,000 bond.
