HOUSTON – Bond has been set at $50,000 for Chad Bujano, the Houston soccer dad accused of murder in a cold case. Defense attorney Neal Davis says his client is innocent.
“It’s everyone’s nightmare,” said Davis. “He didn’t have anything to do with this murder case and he’s looking forward to going to trial as soon as we can to clear his name.”
Neighbors were shocked when they learned that Bujano, a soccer trainer at the Texas United Football Club, had been charged with murder in a 19-year-old cold case.
“You would never suspect him out of anybody on the street,” said neighbor Yasmin Goldman.
“He’s coaching kids and soccer,” explained Davis. “He’s got a job, he’s gainfully employed, has a family, three kids… I mean this is a complete nightmare to him. He’s been arrested out of the blue for a crime he didn’t commit.”
Davis says his client is anxious for his trial to begin.
“He’s 35-years-old. He’s accused of murdering someone when he was 16-years-old. There is no evidence that I’m aware of that’s credible to show that he did this,” Davis said.
Police say that back in 1995 Bujano shot and killed another teen on West Houston Street in broad daylight and that after the shooting he fled to Mexico. But according to Davis, Bujano only left for six months and ever since has been living in Houston under his legal name.
“I think that in cold cases police officers have a lot of pressure to make arrests. Unfortunately that leaves them to sometimes rush to judgment and that’s what they did in this case,” he said.
Bujano’s next court appearance is scheduled for September 26.
